Our History
The University Avenue Bed & Breakfast
(formally the McMurray House) was built around the early 1920’s out of
solid brick and is in the historic district of Columbia Missouri known
as “East Campus”.
In 1994 the home was bought by three
nurses who through extensive renovation converted it into the existing
B&B. The wood floors and staircase were restored to their original
beauty and all the plumbing and electrical wiring was updated.
The University Avenue Bed & Breakfast
opened for business in March 1995. After two of the original owners
moved on to others adventures in life, the one remaining owner took on a
new business partner around 2001.
The two of them continued to satisfy
guest until in early 2005 they decided to “hang up the aprons” and
retire. Both of them not wanting to sell the B&B as a residential home
put it up for sale as a ‘Turn-key’ bed and breakfast operation.
2000 miles away in Banks Oregon,
Brian & Kathy had been thinking of starting a B&B. But with costs of
buying an existing B&B on the West Coast very high, we had to look
elsewhere. In June of 2005 we found the University Avenue B&B on a web
site and contacted the owners. Then later that month we flew out to
Columbia see the house and the surrounding areas.
We both liked the house and its location to the University of Missouri.
After much discussion and prayer we decided to move forward on
purchasing the B&B.
Then on a snowy and cold December 1st
2005 we started a 4 day trip with all of our belongings packed tightly
into a 24 foot moving truck en-route to Columbia Missouri.
We officially signed papers and took
over ownership on December 6th at 3:30 p.m. at Boone County National
Bank. It’s been a great adventure ever since.
